How has this global supermarket started promoting sustainability?

A round of applause for Waitrose, please, as the international supermarket has introduced an initiative with the Emirates Wildlife Society (WWF) to reduce its plastic usage.

From 16 June the supermarket will charge 25fils per plastic bag across five stores in Abu Dhabi in an attempt to create positive habits and promote sustainable practices.

Running for 12 weeks until 8 September, the new trial will also see Waitrose encouraging shoppers to bring in reusable bags and will welcome any carrier bag from any store, not just its own, in a bid to truly make it as easy as possible for customers to recycle.

All funds raised from the trial will be used to support local charities that champion sustainable practices, and if the trial is a success, the store will look to roll the initiative out across the rest of its nine stores in the UAE.

Shoppers, it’s time to change your habits. Let's do this.
