The eco-friendly apps making a difference in the UAE
It's easy being green

We’ve ‘bin’ recycling – have you? If the answer is no, it’s time to start thinking about the future of the planet and trying to reduce the amount of waste we're all putting in landfill. Just think about all those plastic water bottles we burn through on a daily basis. Eek.

Some simple lifestyle alterations could make a big difference – and local apps are here to help. Food-delivery service Zomato recently added extra options to its ordering system, including a 'Don’t send cutlery - go green!' option. (Incidentally, if you’re ordering for someone unwell, it becomes a priority on their radar, too.) Deliveroo are being similarly eco-minded, with the same green option introduced as part of its partnership with Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF in a drive to reduce plastic waste in the UAE.

Meanwhile, dry-cleaning app Washmen has created a separate tab on its website all about recycling. The company collects, recycles and reuses all home plastic and paper when you submit an order. You simply place all the items you want recycled next to your laundry pick up. You can also re-use their bags and hangers. Bravo.

Keeping things local, Alila Hotels & Resorts’ Oman base is committed to sustainable tourism. Alila Jabal Akhdar has implemented the Gift-to-Share programme, which encourages guests to make charitable donations directly from their dining or accommodation bills. Visitors may contribute to community improvements or donate towards basic education and vocational skills for women, so that they can break the poverty cycle.
