Remember when the internet broke earlier this year, unable to cope under the weight of the megalolz provided by Balenciaga’s Dhs8,000 menswear shopper being a dead ringer for IKEA’s iconic plastic Frakta bag? You know the one – you’ve more than likely got a couple stashed away in your laundry room, filled with clothes you’ve been meaning to give to the charity shop.
Turns out, the brand’s Creative Director Demna Gvasalia – in his infinite wisdom – was, as always, ahead of the curve when it came to IKEA loving. Since he sent the now-famous blue leather tote swinging down his SS17 runway, Instagram has become awash with clothing hacks and homages to the Scandi furniture behemoth, riffing on Vetements hoodies and Converse sneakers as the ultimate ironic sartorial statement.
Cue an endless meta-cycle of life imitating art – or is it the other way around? – as now Off-White’s Virgil Abloh has been announced as collaborating with the famous Scandi store on a millennial-focused interiors line, including a spin on the Frakta, which will launch in 2019.
Design icon Tom Dixon will also be partnering on a modular bed for the store that “explores notions of adaptability and future-proofing.” Translation: Delaktig is a bed and sofa that can be modified into different styles of furniture throughout its lifetime. Handy.
This also comes off the back of the successful Stunsig collab with six up-and-coming artists last month – think fashion photography, cartoons and collages applied to cushions, quilt covers, boxes and porcelain. Far from your standard IKEA basics. What we’re most excited by, however, is the news that ultra-cool, luxury fragrance house Byredo is teaming up with IKEA on a range that “takes a democratic approach” to scent. We just hope that doesn’t mean meatballs.
