Sole DXB will continue its mission to put the emirate on the map as a global street-culture capital from 6-8 December 2018, but don't even think about unboxing a new pair of sneakers for the event without reading our edit of the must-see special guests and most pioneering new additions to the footwear, fashion and music festival. Basically we've done all the footwork for you.
1. Learn how to DJ
From 6.30-9.30pm on Friday 7 December, Grazia Girl Gang Ambassador for Music, our very own Megatronic will be showing Sole how she earned the title of fashion’s favourite DJ in a special workshop for Uber. Aspiring DJs will learn how to match beats, produce a 15-minute mix, and come away with everything you need to know to get the party started.
2. Record a track
To celebrate the launch of the Tommy Jeans Crest capsule drop, our friends at Tommy Hilfiger are giving you the chance to record your very own track. Pop into the purpose-built recording studio at Sole, lay down your vocals, select your beats – choose between neo-soul, hip hop, drum’n’bass and dance – shoot your cover artwork, then walk away with an MP4 of your masterpiece.
3. Chow down at Sweet Chick
The Southern soul food eatery co-owned by Sole DXB headliner Nas with locations in NY and LA is bringing all our favourite food combos - chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and mac and cheese – to the emirate. We’ll have one of everything on the menu, please.
4. Get your paws on KAWS
Kim Jones’ Dior Homme menswear debut – co-starring American artist and designer Brian Donnelly, aka KAWS - will make an early appearance at Sole’s Dior Men’s pop-up. Dior x KAWs will be available to pre-order alongside a kidswear capsule collection and the return of the Dior BMX.
5. Check into the Cadillac Hotel
Q: How could Cadillac possibly beat last year’s Letters to Andy Warhol exhibition for Sole DXB 2017? A: By inviting revellers to stay at the very first Cadillac Hotel to celebrate the regional reveal of the company’s first-ever compact SUV, the XT4, of course. Expect themed rooms and a roof terrace boasting unparalleled 180-degree views of Sole DXB site in D3. Save us a sunlounger, please…
6. Be part of the art
Herschel Supply Co. has joined forces with LA artist and streetwear hustler Joshua Vides, who’ll be creating a custom installation to celebrate his capsule collection. All drawn in his 2-D black-and-white signature style, we’ve been promised an Instagrammable immersive space that’s part museum, part optical illusion. Sign us up.
7. Be Notorious
Not only will hip hop photographer Barron Claiborne will be signing copies of Contact High: A Visual History of Hip Hop (Clarkson Potter) but he’s also offering us the chance to recreate The Notorious BIG’s iconic King of New York shoot - Biggie’s actual gold crown included – in an exclusive session with the photographer himself.
8. Hear Lion Babe roar
The musical line up on 7 December features Blood Orange, Giggs, Sho Madjozi, Masego and Slowthai, and on Saturday 8 December includes Nas, Roxanne Shanté and DaniLeigh, but the Grazia girls are super-excited about NY R&B duo from New York City, Jillian Hervey Lucas Goodman aka Lion Babe.
9. Meet the real Roxanne
You’ve seen her Netflix biopic Roxanne Roxanne now discover the real New York battle rapper and pioneer female MC Roxanne Shanté,, on Saturday from 3-4pm in conversation with Vikki Tobak, journalist and author of Contact High: A Visual History of Hip Hop (Clarkson Potter), and see her in action on the main stage.
10. Witness hip hop history
The big news for Sole DXB this season is that Grammy award-nominated, multi-platinum-selling New York rapper Nas is set to take to the main stage on Saturday 8 December for his first-ever performance in the United Arab Emirates. Nas is the latest entry to Sole DXB’s hall of fame and he follows in the illustrious footsteps of OG rap royalty DMC (of Run-DMC), and last year’s headliner Pusha T, half of hip-hop duo Clipse.
