When contemporary artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian passed away in April this year, she left a lasting legacy to the world thanks to an aesthetic that melded traditional Iranian craft techniques with Western geometry to create a new cross-cultural language.
From 12 October to 28 December 2019, Sharjah Art Foundation, in collaboration with IMMA, will be paying tribute to her contribution in Sunset, Sunrise, a retrospective exhibition at Al Hamriyah Studios, in Al Hamriyah. More than seventy works will be on display ranging from painting, sculpture and jewellery to work on paper and collages.
A contemporary and friend of Andy Warhol during the time she spent working in fashion and art in New York, Monir's calling card which forms the connective thread to her work is Iranian reverse-glass painting and mirror mosaics, a craft traditionally passed through the generations, which will also be included.
