Have you always dreamed of becoming a world-famous artist, but can’t draw more than a stick figure? Now’s your chance. It seems art isn’t all Mona Lisa’s and sunflowers – case in point: a banana duct taped to a wall.

Aptly named Comedian, the ‘artwork’ was created by eccentric Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and is literally just a banana stuck to the wall with duct tape. Perhaps the most hilarious thing of all, though, is that Maurizio shared the piece was a year in the making. After trying it with fake bananas, he eventually decided to stick with the real deal (and purchased one in a local supermarket days before Miami’s Art Basel).

Of course, because it’s 2019, people are going crazy over the piece, with one woman purchasing it for Dhs440, 000 the moment it went up for sale. They’ve since created two more pieces, one of which was purchased by an art-lover for the same price, while the other is being prepped for sale to a museum. It’s pretty interesting considering the purpose of the artwork is to offer insight into the kind of objects we value and how we assign worth.

Coming from a guy whose last piece - displayed in the Guggenheim, no less - was a fully-functional 18-karat gold toilet titled America (which he insisted people use), perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised.
