The nineties coming-of-age phenomenon that launched a worldwide obsession with plaid is getting a reboot. Clueless followed the life of Beverly Hills high school students as they navigated love, a social life and, most difficult of all, fashion. In the iconic film, Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, was the main character but the TV series will focus on Dionne – Cher’s BFF and second-in-command. The remake is described as Mean Girls meets a Lizzo music video, and the plot is… interesting.
The series won’t be a comeback-filled comedy, but a mystery drama that places Dionne in an LA high school in 2020, and follows her as she tries to solve the disappearance of her best friend Cher – all while trying to keep her status as the most popular girl in school. We anticipate box-fresh sneakers, millennial pink everything and lots (and lots) of almond milk lattes.
The original impacted pop culture arguably more than any other film, thanks to still-useful taglines, endless fashion inspiration and a relatable interpretation of nineties youth culture. Oh, and a young Paul Rudd.
So, what do you think - should Clueless be left alone? Or are you interested to see where 2019 can take it? We love the original, but we’ll probably be binge-watching guilt-free when it airs. Just saying.
