Cinema Akil is collaborating with the Institut Français with the support of NAAS (Network of Alternative Arab Screens), to present Agnès Varda: In Loving Memory (1928 - 2019), a retrospective on the work of the French director.
Widely considered the only female voice of French New Wave cinema, Cinema Akil will celebrate Varda’s pioneering spirit by screening four of her most famous works.
These include Varda by Agnes, a documentary that sheds light on her work as a director; The Gleaners and I, a film about the people who pick up left-over and disguarded items; Cleo from 5 to 7, which perfectly encapsulates Paris in the ’60; and La Pointe Courte, a film about a young couple who visit the seaside to resolve their problems.
Screenings will take place on Friday, 8 November and Saturday, 9 November and again on Friday, 15 November and Saturday, 16 November, and the event is the first of its kind in the region.
So if you're a fan of French cinema or simply want to side-step the usual blockbusters, this event is not to be missed.
