In honour of International Women’s Day, Dubai's Cinema Akil is screening Amy Adrion’s Half The Picture: Women Directors in Hollywood on the 4th of March. Amy’s first feature film celebrates the ground-breaking work of female film directors, and investigates gender inequality and discrimination in the industry through interviews with high-profile female directors, who discuss their careers as well as the joys and challenges they’ve faced along the way. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Amy, so don’t forget your notebook!
Cinema Akil, the super-trendy arthouse cinema in AlSerkal Avenue (where else?), is an independent cinema, which aims to create awareness about film and the cinematic arts - so it’s only fitting that it would be the location for such a powerful film.
Alliance Française Dubai is also celebrating International Women’s Day by hosting an all-female director’s film festival, aptly named the ‘Femmes Film Festival’. We hope they sell T-shirts. The month-long festival will showcase movies directed by Mediterranean women, and will take place every Saturday and Tuesday until the end of the month. Plus, entry is free!
The festival kicks off on the 9th of March with a discussion at The Studio Dubai Opera, where an all-female panel, including the co-programmer of Films Femmes Méditerranée Christine Ishkinazi, will discuss the ‘Balance for Better’ theme, addressing gender equality issues in film.
- Half The Picture: Monday March 4th at 7.30pm, entrance is free. Femmes Film Festival: Screenings every Saturday at 5pm and Tuesday at 7.30pm, 9-30th of March, at the Alliance Française Dubai Theatre. For information and registration, click here.
