Stranded at the drive-in: The new curfew means our open-air cinema dreams are over

Dubai's drive-in cinema experience went awry, not unlike Sandy and Danny's date in Grease (1979)

The curtain has fallen on Mall of the Emirates drive-in movie theatre days after it opened due to the revised curfew in the UAE.

With the extension of the National Sterilisation Programme from 8pm to 6am starting from Wednesday 20 May until further notice, the drive-in cinema will be put on hold.

"In adherence with the government’s updated curfew extension in the UAE, Vox Cinemas Drive-in at Mall of the Emirates will be temporarily closed from Wednesday 20 May," announced a spokesperson for Vox Cinemas.

Those who have already bought tickets for one of the drive-in movies this week will get their money back. "We have contacted all customers who advance booked and initiated a full refund," the spokesperson assured us. "We wait patiently for the return of drive-in, and until then we ask everyone to follow all government guidance, and please stay safe."
