We’ve been preparing for the live-action remake of Mulan since its reveal two years ago and the time has almost come. With just over a month to go, Disney released the final trailer and we may or may not have already watched it five times.
If for some reason you aren’t familiar with the incredible tale of Hua Mulan, here’s the low down – she is a dedicated, sword-swinging warrior that disguised herself as a man to fight against the Huns in place of her elderly father who was unfit for battle, and went on to become the best warrior the country (and our screens) has ever seen.
In previous trailers, we saw Mulan’s original destiny – to marry a man chosen for her – and her transformation into a fierce warrior. In the final trailer, we meet the villains; evil Hun leader Bori Khan, played by Jason Scott Lee, and Xian Lang, played by Gong Li, Khan’s right-hand woman who, rather interestingly, is also a shapeshifter. Legendary Chinese actor and martial artist Jet Li also stars alongside an all-star Asian cast.
As excited as we are, we were upset to learn that this remake will not only be without Mushu, the one-liner filled dragon originally voiced by Eddie Murphy, but it also won’t have any songs at all, as it aims to portray the real legend of Hua Mulan rather than duplicate the animated film. However, we did hear an instrumental version of Reflection in the trailer, and we’ll take what we can get. We’re sure that's enough to have us sobbing anyway.
