The world went into mourning when we lost Whitney Houston eight years ago, and music lovers were devastated that they would never get the opportunity to see her perform live. Amazingly, seeing her in person is now a possibility once again.
A holographic version of the late icon is currently touring Europe as part of An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour, and will soon make its way to the rest of the world. The concert features Whitney’s hologram, of course, as well as real back-up dancers, singers and a live band.
Rest assured, this isn’t like the glitchy, grey holograms we saw growing up. Audience members say it’s almost as good as watching her perform in person, with the only factors that snap you back to reality being Whitney’s minimal movement and the visible projector. Between classics like I Will Always Love You and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Whitney speaks to the audience through old recordings from past concerts and studio sessions, giving the concert a ‘live’ feel.
The concert was created by Whitney’s sister-in-law Pat Houston together with BASE Hologram, who spent hundreds of hours dissecting Whitney’s live performances and combining the tapes with body doubles and CGI. While unorthodox, and some may even go so far as to say creepy, Pat Houston insists this is what Whitney would have wanted, as she always suggested doing an intimate ‘Evening with Whitney’. Speaking at the first show, Pat shared “This isn’t something that we’re just putting together. This is something that she wanted to do, and I get very emotional watching this because it is so close to what she wanted. The only thing missing was her, physically.”
