From seeing a friend active on Instagram when they haven’t texted you back in days, to realising your mother is secretly a huge fan of My Little Pony; it’s no secret that the true tales of horror on Instagram were conjured up through the photo-sharing platform's “Following” tab — a section that shows the likes, comments, and follows of who you’re following.
when hasnt the instagram "following" tab ended in heartbreak— DARCIE WILDER (@333333333433333) 25 November 2016
Thankfully for those of us up at 3am liking cat memes, Instagram is scrapping that feature entirely. Beginning this week, instead of seeing both the 'Following' and 'You' tabs when you click on the heart icon on the bottom panel of your Instagram, you’ll only see your own activity.
A dramatic problem ...:
"Instagram should really remove the Following tab. It really hurts when someone close is ignoring you but they are busy liking and following other people," said one user.— Dirk M (@DirkMarienfeld) 29 September 2019
Instagram's head of product, Vishal Shah, has said that the following tab was a feature many users didn't know existed as it was developed long before there were any other ways of finding people to follow. As a result, Instagram decided to do away with it in the name of maintaining simplicity on the app. We’re just happy to wave goodbye to the days of mistakenly stumbling across the tab and realising your boyfriend interacts more with the cats of Instagram than with you.
