Provence is the most magical place to me… It’s where we got engaged, where we got married and where we took our daughter on her first holiday. There are endless places to visit, from the glitzy French Riviera to the sun-drenched hills of the Luberon Valley, weekly markets to snoop through and delightful village squares where you can rest and reboot with a glass of something chilled. But it’s the pink sunsets, the farm-to-table ingredients and the miles of idyllic greenery that stole my heart – this place is my haven.
Stay: You will find the glorious Château Saint-Martin & Spa, Vence, a mere 30 minutes from Nice airport – it’s a wonderful pit-stop before heading off into the Luberon valley. The views are sensational, as is the wonderful service from the staff and the on-site art gallery is an inspiration in itself. It’s impeccably chic yet at the same time still holds on to that rustic French charm we come here for.
Eat: At first glance, La Colombe d’Or, Saint Paul de Vence, is a charming restaurant with a bustling terrace just like any other. But look a little closer and you will note the priceless Picassos dotted around the house, the expert waiters with their bow ties and perhaps a famous chef at the table next to you (we saw Heston Blumenthal on our visit). Soon you'll realise you’re dining at the hottest spot in town. Needless to say, book a table way in advance.
Explore: Provence is made up of picturesque rolling hills and vineyards – rent a small car to explore the charming villages and pack a picnic. Highlights include Lourmarin, Gordes and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence where you can wander around the chic boutiques and stop for le déjeuner and enjoy generous platters of meats and cheese. Put simply, Provence equals summertime perfection.
