Spotlight on the Emirates: Ras Al Khaimah

We’ve selflessly taken it upon ourselves to road trip around the seven stunning United Arab Emirates and put together an unmissable guide. Thank us later
Spotlight on the Emirates: Ras Al Khaimah

Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah

The hotel has become somewhat of an iconic destination in the tranquil northern Emirate, thanks to the world-renowned Waldorf service, award-winning restaurants and enticing spa. The beach-front setting is only 45 minutes from Dubai International Airport and boasts two enormous swimming pools and a 350m white sand private beach, set against the blue water of the Arabian Sea. Bliss.

Despite the seemingly overwhelming size of the property, there are actually only 346 rooms and suites, meaning guests enjoy space, indulgent amenities and seriously spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf and Hajar Mountains. Food-wise, there are 10 restaurants to choose from, including US steakhouse Lexington Grill, Arabic fare at Marjan and fresh Japanese cuisine at UMI.

Adrenaline junkies, this one's for you. Measuring 2.83 kilometers long (that’s the equivalent of more than 28 football pitches), the world's longest zipline runs through the mountains of Jebel Jais at a hair-raising 1,680 metres above sea level. Gulp. All ages are welcome to take on the death-defying zip line, but ‘fliers’ have to be between 45kg and 150kg in weight and at least 120 cm tall. If the thrill isn't enough to get you in the harness, at least do it for the 'gram. See to book.

After all that excitement, we feel it is a must to visit the award-winning Waldorf Astoria Spa. A place of refuge and restoration, the undersea interior theme is a delight (think calming blue walls and floor-to-ceiling one-way windows). Even better, on 28 Novemeber and 19 December, from 7pm to 9pm, the hotel is offering exclusive ladies' pampering nights. This means we can all experience two mini treatments - such as a Neom de-stress massage, express facial or back massage - while enjoying light bites and selected mocktails. Sold.

Finally, don't drive into the sunset without observing a camel race. A traditional heritage activity in Ras Al Khaimah, the races take place on the weekends at the camel racetrack from September to April. The national sport is a great way to experience it and meet locals. See for more information.

Grazia's verdict...

The northernmost Emirate of the United Arab Emirates is a sheer delight, and offers the perfect mix of soothing sand on its Arabian Gulf beaches and ultra-fun activities for outdoor enthusiasts, all backed by the rugged mountains.
