Introducing Story of Source: your new favourite sustainable homeware brand

Meet the women behind the Dubai-based artisanal brand that celebrates indigenous techniques, plant-based dyes and sustainable materials

It's becoming abundantly clear that 2020 is the year we need to do better. And doing better begins at home. Step forward Story of Source - a Dubai-based brand started by Janak Kohli and Yulia Kurdina employing artisans using their indigenous techniques from leather work to weaving to backstrap to rug making to textiles, plant-based dyes and sustainable materials.

The result? A creative and modern way to craft rugs, cushions, throws and bed blankets, and accessories with artisans around the world.  Each of Story of Source’s collections are devoted to a different country, starting with Guatemala. And taking social responsibility one step further, Story of Source's artisans also set the prices for their goods.

Founders Jay and Yulia tell Grazia, “Emphatically different to what Dubai has to offer, Story’s pieces aim to incorporate soul and authenticity into its mix of textures, patterns and influences. And how could they not? Each piece is meticulously crafted entirely by hand (many, in the fact) over the course of weeks. Contrasting raw with refined, neutrals with brights, sophistication with spontaneity and brought to life by master artisans across crafts and regions of our source countries, with each collection we endeavour to uphold and encourage communities and craft.”

At the heart of Story of Source, is the desire to continue to keep tradition alive and to pass the stories of craft through generations. Join them to support artisan communities on their website. The best part? You can be part of the story too and co-create your own design for bespoke and upholstery or textiles.
