Grecian culture and cuisine are given the new-normal treatment in optimal fine fashion at DIFC’s Gaia. It elevates the traditional taverna setting and offers an undeniably relaxed setting that’s sophisticated.
Upon entering the rustic-inspired doors, temperatures are checked right away, before being welcomed into the chic white dinning space, decorated with monochromatic photography and Mediterranean memorabilia. The white-cloth clad tables are still spaced and set in their pre-COVID-19 arrangement, although only every other one is in use.
The waiters and staff all don the latest get up – face masks and gloves – and are on hand to offer hand sanitiser before offering up the menu. With Gaia being Chef Izu Ani’s modern take on traditional Greek fare, we were extremely excited to try some of our favourites from the motherland. So naturally we ordered the taramousalata and tiropita. The former was a light, delectable iteration of a classic, while the latter added truffle to the mix for a more refined, contemporary take. The grilled calamari also didn’t disappoint and was cooked to perfection.
Taking cue from our very helpful waiter, we opted for the flavour-packed Chilean sea bass with pickled cabbage rice for our main – big enough for us to share – with a side of broccoli and asparagus. And of course, had to taste the loukoumades for dessert, which at Gaia, are served with frozen Greek yoghurt and drizzled with honey.
Gaia is a Dubai dining destination that transports you to a quaint European setting, where the ambiance and food follow suit, and safety measures are still very much intact.
