The Stay-Safe Supper Club: La Cantine Du Faubourg

When you enter the tower that houses La Cantine Du Faubourg, your temperature is taken by a discreet smart camera to the side. It’s then quickly taken again, just before entering the Dubai institution, further inside the building. You’ll also notice that hand sanitiser is displayed by the doorman for your disposal. Safety comes first at this Parisian-inspired restaurant.

When you pass through the doors, the hostesses are there to greet you, and further offer more hand sanitiser, if you happened to miss it just outside, before showing you to your seats.

The luxurious layout lends itself nicely to social distancing as the elongated tables in the middle of the grand room are simply set only in the corners, and the tables that surround are sparce. The waiters – with their undeniably bubbly disposition – also remain at a distance, as much as possible, and are clad in the new-normal getup: masks, gloves, and all.

Grilled octopus with ratte potatoes and yuzu dressing

Overcome with options, we left our dinning decisions in more than capable hands, and the waiter chose a first course of sea bass carpaccio with black truffle and pink peppercorn, the yellowfin tuna ceviche with sesame, avocado, sweet onion vinaigrette – an undeniable favourite – along with the house favourite, burrata, which comes served melon Charentais and datterino tomato.

He also insisted on the quinoa and kale salad with apple, goji berries and aged parmesan cheese – not an obvious choice, but it certainly didn't disappoint.

Squid ink risotto

The main course consisted of the walnut-crusted Chilean sea bass, surrounded by its light pumpkin, quinoa and parmesan sauce, the grilled octopus with ratte potatoes and yuzu dressing, along with the delectable squid ink risotto, served with grilled calamari, tomato and basil. A fine French feast finished by a round of delicious desserts. The profiteroles and creme brulee are highly recommended.
