With stand-up shows on her CV called What Would Beyoncé Do? and Am I Right, Ladies? we’re already imagining that stand-up comedian Luisa Omielan is going to be our kind of girl. And we soon discover we’re not mistaken. “I love going to a nightclub, and people love going to a gig. You go watch a Beyoncé concert, and it’s an insane experience, right?” she explains ahead of her forthcoming set in Dubai on 28 February, brought to us by Those Guys Events.
“Comedy is not like that. You sit there and you laugh and it’s cool, but I wanted to bring the live performance experience to comedy. I want people to go as mad over a stand-up show as they do over watching Beyoncé, and so that’s why I try to marry the two.” So much so that it’s not unusual for Luisa to turn up to a show with a DJ and backing dancers in tow. “I want the music loud, and I want people feeling good. It’s upbeat, it’s in your face, but it’s fun, empowering, and exciting. Come have a good time.”
Party vibes aside, as a social commentator, Luisa believes that Dubai audiences will relate to her honesty. “Body image or dating or relationships or the politics of not knowing anyone can be quite universal. If we go out for dinner, what would we end up talking about? Politics, work, relationships, and what we’re doing with our lives. It’s just a funny chat with your friends, but on stage.” We’ll never look at a ladies’ night in the same light again…
