“Waiter, waiter! There’s pasta in my drink!” You exclaim while out for dinner at your local Italian eatery. “Yes madam, it’s meant to be in there,” he replies calmly. Oh.
Yes, you read that correctly. Pasta straws are now a thing. Dubai-based restaurant BASTA! has become the first in the UAE to offer diners pasta straws instead of plastic ones, right as the world is finally starting to unite against plastic pollution of our oceans.
Commenting on the initiative, BASTA! Chef David Myers tells Grazia, “Being someone who loves spending time in the ocean, I witness the consequences of our overuse of single-use plastic first hand. I like to think that by stopping the use of plastic straws, we are making a small mark right here in the UAE in a fun and quirky BASTA! way.” Amazing work, guys.
Terrifying statistics have recenty reported there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050, with straws being a major factor since most of them are never recycled. America alone use 500 million straws a day, which is enough straw waste to wrap the circumference of the earth 2.5 times.
Alongside the introduction of pasta straws in BASTA!, all of David Myers’ three Dubai venues will soon be banning plastic straws entirely and replacing with more sustainable alternatives.
We hope other restaurants in the Middle East are taking note.
