Breaking news: The UAE is hot. While we all knew that already – and hide indoors every day to escape – it seems we forget that some aren’t lucky enough to avoid it. There’s a growing number of abandoned dogs in the UAE that are forced to live in scorching shelters, often with just thatched roofs for protection, and are left unloved and abandoned for years on end.
The Stray Dog Centre in Umm Al Quwain knows that not everyone has the resources, time or space to bring a dog into their homes, but they’re reaching out to you to help make a dog’s day and remind them what it means to be loved.
Every Friday and Saturday you can volunteer to walk the dogs, while more hands-on dog enthusiasts can bathe them, feed them and assist in administering their medicine. Some generous volunteers even donate food and supplies to make their time in the shelter as comfortable as possible.
Founded in 2013, Stray Dogs Centre UAQ is a non-profit organisation that aims to help abused and neglected animals and address the staggering amount of stray animals, and has since grown into a rehabilitation facility. If you don’t have transport, don’t worry – other volunteers meet up in central locations to carpool and make sure everyone can do their bit hassle-free.
And, before you say it, we know it’s hot - but think about what it means for them. You can go back to your air-conditioned home afterwards, and you'll be giving them fuller bellies, happier hearts and a memory of a great day. If you fall in love with a furry friend (which you definitely will), you’re more than welcome to give them a forever home. Just remember, pets are for life, so please don’t decide in a hurry.
