How to Marie Kondo your wardrobe in an hour

Because 2019 is all about being clutter-free (and sparking joy)...
How to Marie Kondo your wardrobe in an hour

Marie Kondo is on a mission to "spark joy in the world through tidying" and with Netflix’s latest series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, the world’s favourite organiser helps real families and couples face their mess and clutter. So far, so inspiring. But how can you take those lessons and apply them in real life... possibly to one of the most overwhelming of all areas in your home; your wardrobe?

As Kondo’s waiting list is a mile long - possibly longer - we've laid out the game-changing steps you need to follow. Ready?

Pull everything out (and we mean everything)

Begin by pulling everything out of your closet into one big pile so that you can see the true volume and extent of everything you own. This might be a little daunting at first, however, if you’re pushed for time choose a category of clothing to sort through (for example, tops or skirts) and instead break up your wardrobe edit into bite-sized chunks so you don’t overwhelm yourself.

The Joy Check

The KonMari method says to go through each and every item you own one by one and ask yourself if it ‘sparks joy’? It might sound a little out there at first, asking yourself if a pair of socks bring a bolt of joy to your life, but don’t knock it till you've tried it. It's a more practical approach to decluttering and makes you re-think if you really enjoy wearing pieces or are just hanging onto them for the sake of it. Before discarding items, you need to thank them for serving you and show them gratitude. This is also a great time to take items to the tailors or dry cleaners that you might have been putting off...

The Famous Folding Technique

Once you've sorted through all your items, Marie suggests to fold them all with what has become a famous technique. Folding your clothes vertically makes everything easier to find and hard to mess up when you’re rummaging through your drawers trying to get ready in the morning. By using shoeboxes as draw dividers you can get the best use out of the space.

Rediscover Your Closet and Style

After you've sorted through your closet, cleared away the clutter and folded your little heart out, you can say hello to your new wardrobe! If you’re anything like us, you may have worn the same rotation of easy-to-grab, reliable pieces, but now seeing your closet in a new light will have you wearing things you completely forgot about - we promise.
