Forget ghosting, “stashing” is the online dating trend that is getting most attention, thanks TikTok.
Coined in 2017 by Metro UK writer Ellen Scott, “stashing” is when you’re in a relationship with someone and everything seems to be going swimmingly on the surface, but your other half refuses to introduce you to their friends or family, or put pictures of you on their social media accounts. To all intents and purposes, it’s like you don’t exist.
And now TikTok users are calling out the process for what it is by making videos of them lip-syncing to the 2016 parody song, Questions Part 3 by rappers Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson, while scrolling through someone’s Instagram feed.
The thought process behind stashing? It’s perfect if the person you’re dating wants to make a quick exit from your relationship and doesn’t want to have to do a digital spring clean of their Instagram grid, or field annoying questions from those nearest and dearest to them. It’s also ideal for commitment phobes who don’t want to admit they’re in a relationship even though they’re enjoying all the trappings of intimacy.
Either way, we wholeheartedly unstan.
