Stuck inside, forced to shelter from the piercing summer sun and socially distancing at home, it’s becoming abundantly clear that décor matters. Not only does homeware impress those guests we’re not entertaining (ha), but it changes our mood, informs our mental heath, and creates a physical environment that can reflect our values, emotions and goals. So, how better to manifest those positive intentions than to support fellow artisans in developing countries, who create beautiful pieces with the environment as a top priority. Step forward homeware brand, Story by Source.
Let’s set the scene. Janak Kohli and Yulia Kurdina, Story of Source Founders and avid travellers, are traipsing through city after city, country after country, in the quest for that special something that will capture their imaginations.
Finally, it arrives. And it’s not where they expected it. It comes from everyday people; it seeps out of ancient traditions and runs through individual cultural identities. Together, the extraordinary stories of these ordinary people build up the narrative that is the backbone of Story’s company. With their remarkable and unique pieces, Kohli and Kurdina, bring these stories back to the UAE, empowering skilled craft workers and artisan communities as they go. No big deal.
For Eid this year, their curated capsule takes inspiration from traditional Indonesian crafting techniques, including itak, batik and fossilised wood (aka petrified wood), that prove that artistry can co-exist with ancestry in our modern urbanised homes.
So, what’s the story (pun intended) with this season’s collection? Modernity meets tradition in the Spiral Cushion, which embodies a conversation between the age-old batik technique, and contemporary, almost pop art, design. The Jarit Cushion, reminiscent of a starry night sky, is similarly original as it is crafted from a Javanese textile originally worn as a skirt, a must-have for any eclectic aficionado. A particular favourite of the Grazia team is the petrified wood (aka “rock wood”) which is unearthed and sculpted from a fossilisation process which can take up to 65 million years!
And the story doesn’t end there… join them to create your own personalised designs which will be hand-crafted by talented artisans; be part of the story to be part of a sustainable solution.
