If you’ve been watching Gwyneth Paltrow’s new show, Goop Labs, on Netflix, you’ll have seen the episode dedicated to Wif Hom aka The Iceman.
For the uninitiated, Wim Hof is a Dutch extreme athlete who has devised a method that claims to harness the power of meditation, breathing exercises, and exposure to cold, to help you regulate your stress levels.
The Wim Hof Method also asserts to help people increase their energy levels, overcome pain and stress, boost their immune systems, redefine their limits and improve their performance levels.

“From overcoming fear to improving sporting performance, the benefits of the Wim Hof Method are wide and varied. Many people find the Wim Hof Method to work as a complement (or alternative) to modern medicine. It's been reported to alleviate a number of conditions. Better sleep, overcoming depression, improving energy levels and speeding up the recovery process are just a few examples of these,” Dubai-based Wim Hof Instructor Isaac Mullens tells Grazia Middle East.
“Heightened awareness and determination are reasons why many athletes, instructors and health fanatics use the Wim Hof Method, alongside better recovery times and gaining more energy in everyday life as well as while performing or training.”
This weekend, Isaac who is also a Yoga Therapist with over 20 years teaching experience will host a Wim Hof workshop alongside Daisy Ellison, a Yoga Teacher, Breath Coach and Somatic Therapist, at Nasab, the hip co-working space and club located within the KOA Campus in Dubai.
The workshop aims to give attendees a thorough understanding of the science behind the method before experiencing it for themselves – including breath work and cold therapy.
But there’s a lot more to it than simply dunking yourself in an ice bath.
“The Wim Hof Method helps you connect with your own personal truth through feeling and experiencing real life without any blind faith,” Isaac explains. “This means you may experience short stints of complete bliss, confidence, gratitude, and love. This method will show you how to tap into your own inner fire and discover your true nature, regardless of the beliefs you already hold.”
His one caveat? "Cultivating a ‘strong’ and positive mindset is a critical part of our method. When you have a positive mindset and are fully committed, you’ll go much deeper in your breathing and cold exposure practices. So my top tip is develop positive outcome expectancy."
- The Wim Hof Workshop takes place 31 January, 1 and 2 February, from 10 am until 5pm at Nasab, Koa Dubai, Wadi Al Safa 3. Cost: Dhs 900 for one day. To book, Nasabdubai.com
