A woman will kick off the Olympic Torch Relay for the first time in history

Greek Olympian Anna Korakaki will be the first female torchbearer in history to kick off the Olympic Torch Relay in Olympia, Greece – birthplace of the games.

Anna won a gold and bronze medal for shooting in the Rio Olympics, and took to Instagram to share her excitement over the historic (and unanimous) decision. “What a great honour that is, since it’s the first time in history a woman carries the Olympic Torch from Ancient Olympia where its journey around the world begins!”.

After making its way around Greece for eight days, via Japanese runner Mizuki Noguchi and Japanese wrestler Saori Yoshida, Greek pole vaulter Katerina Stefanidis will pass it on to the Tokyo 2020 team before it’s flown to the host city in preparation for the opening ceremony.

  • The relay will begin on March 12 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be held from July 24 until August 9.
