Charlize Theron believes women should stick together. “To be strong, you need to,” she tells Grazia in her calm and soothing accent. “We are in an amazing time right now for women’s empowerment, but we need to keep it going. This can’t just be a phase – this needs to become the new norm.”
It is fitting, then, that we meet with the legendary lady after she has shot her latest campaign with Dior. The new fragrance, J’adore Absolu, portrays a powerful new message: that the J’adore woman is no longer alone. Rather, she walks with a group of diverse women who are even stronger when stood in unity. “I'm very excited to experience this new era for us,” Charlize enthuses. “There is no better time to be a woman than today.”
J'adore fragrance was born in 1999 and Charlize has been the face since 2005 - following her Oscar win for 2003 movie Monster. Grazia greatly admires the star for leaving beauty maintenance in the backseat and portaying gritty roles that don’t always take favourably to her appearance. “So many times we fall victim to focusing on the exterior to gauge our beauty - but so much beauty comes from the confidence and power you feel in harnessing your womanhood.”
Speaking of confidence, as seen in the campaign video for the luxury floral scent, how did she find soaking in a bath of gold? Charlize laughs, “Once you've taken a bath in liquid gold you feel like you're turning into an idol!”
What is the definition of femininity for the star? “Not apologising for any aspect of being a woman. We as women can dress up, wear make-up, go out and not have to sacrifice our independence, power, or voice. You can be feminine, independent and strong all at once – they are not mutually exclusive,” she replies.
The mum-of-two has been the face of J'adore for 13 years, a record of longevity in the luxury world. Looking forward, the star also continues to rule in Hollywood. “I have a comedy film coming out in June with Seth Rogen, and we are also in the early development stages of Atomic Blonde 2,” Charlize reveals. Who inspires the star to keep pushing boundaries? “My mother is my ultimate inspirational icon. Outside of her, Nelson Mandela,” she finishes firmly. All hail Charlize Theron.
