While countless celebrities and fans have paid tribute to the late, great NBA star Kobe Bryant after he and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were tragically killed in a helicopter crash earlier this week, one seems to have resonated the most.
During ESPN’s SportsCenter show, anchor Elle Duncan shared a moving story about how Kobe had been so proud to be the father of girls, and even joked with her that he was a “girl dad” through and through.
“I would have five more girls if I could,” he told Duncan during their private chat two years previously at an ESPN event in New York.
And the TV presenter’s words, which have gone viral, have sparked an online trend where “girl dads” are taking to social media to pay their respects and reiterate Kobe’s pride.
Close friend and JLo’s soon-to-be husband, Alex Rodriguez, took to Twitter to share, “I’m so proud and lucky to be a #GirlDad”.
While basketball star Scottie Pippen posted a snap of his daughter Sophia and captioned it, “GirlDad”.
Rappers Timbaland and Bow Wow have also shared images of their daughters with the hashtag.
