And now for the most surprising news we’ve heard in a while: Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o is adding rapper to her ever-growing list of job titles. Lupita may be best known for her roles in 12 Years A Slave, Us and Black Panther, but her alter-ego Troublemaker is about to make waves in the music scene.
The beautiful queen @Ciara asked me if Troublemaker could make an appearance on her new song, #Melanin, and you know I had to show up and show out! All the lyrical credit to my long-time collaborator @RobynHoodmusic for being the mastermind behind Troublemaker's bars. pic.twitter.com/rnzau2azjI— Lupita Nyong'o (@Lupita_Nyongo) November 22, 2019
Lupita made her rap debut in Ciara’s Melanin – a track celebrating the importance of being proud of your skin colour – which also featured musicians La La Anthony, City Girls and Ester Dean. “It’s Troublemaker back on the scene”, Lupita begins before dropping bars like “I’m Mexican born but a Kenyan queen… I keep it so classy, cover girl, you know I’m sassy… Movie deals, I get a lot… These melanin chicks ‘bout to run the whole world”.
The actress has always been an advocate for self-love and embracing your skin colour, as she was bullied throughout childhood and would wish for lighter skin, so she now encourages young girls to feel empowered in their own skin and recognise their beauty. Lupita also wrote the New York Times best-selling children’s book Sulwe on the same topic.
