Finding a truly unique make-up brand is perhaps the ultimate of all beauty goals. But why stop at influencing the industry when you can change the world? Enter Charlotte Tilbury. Five years since turning her hand from celebrity make-up artist to company creator, she’s won more than 160 awards and expanded her British brand into a global empire. And how well deserved this is.
“Make-up has the ability to empower women,” Charlotte tells Grazia, matter of factly. “To me, products are so much more than decoration. I truly believe they can change your life. Make-up has this magic ability to morph your state of mind and boost your confidence. If you look good, you feel good, you exude confidence and the world reacts to you in a positive way. Beauty is incredibly powerful, and with the right make-up, anything is possible.”
And it seems that nothing is impossible for Charlotte. The brains behind the cult favourite cosmetic line is opening her first Beauty Wonderland store in Abu Dhabi on 11 October. She expands, “I am determined to be a disruptor in the industry and I want my company to be known for ground-breaking innovation. I want to make sure we sustain and build on the momentum we have with further openings.”
Let’s move on to the star’s newest launches: Magic Away Liquid concealer and Genius Magic Powder. Why won’t we be able to live without these, we ask Charlotte. “I have been working on this formula for years,” she replies. “The concealer has Persian silk tree bark extract, which reduces the appearance of fine lines, dark circles and puffiness. It also has palmitoyl glycine, which makes the skin look bouncy, fresh and youthful, and extract of wild indigo to help brighten the under-eyes.”
And the powder? “The light-diffusing loose powder blurs, visibly reduces dark shadows and helps to mattify and smooth the appearance of the skin, but also helps to boost radiance,” Charlotte explains. We’re impressed.
With the brand now boasting an enviable array of products, Grazia wants to know this: which one do you save from a burning building? “It’s so difficult to choose, darling,” Charlotte laughs. “But if I had to, I couldn’t be without my Magic Cream. I never go anywhere without it and it was how this brand began.”
She continues, “I always say you can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas. The cream got its name because for years I used to mix it myself and use it backstage at shoots and shows to turnaround and moisturise the tired skin of supermodels and celebrities. Every time they would ask for my ‘magic’ cream, so I decided to re-create it and share it with everyone.”
With more launches still to come this year, Charlotte – who now has over 46 million views on her YouTube channel and 2.1m Instagram followers – beams before she leaves us and says, “I couldn’t be more excited about what’s happening next. Stay tuned, darlings!” This woman is unstoppable.
