Here’s why you should add jade rolling into your skincare regime

On your morning scroll of Instagram you may have noticed jade rollers cropping up in various attractive beauty flat lays. Its current popularity makes it easy to dismiss the massage tool as an influencer prop of the moment, but in fact jade rollers have been around for centuries.

Originating from China where jade is seen as a semi-precious stone symbolising wealth and positivity, rolling the tool over the face was believed to promote prosperity and today the uses are further established. Dr. Lamees Hamdan, dermatologist and Founder of Shiffa skincare, explains the benefits “jade rolling stimulates blood circulation to the face and lymphatic drainage, it also contours the facial muscles, helps with reducing fine lines and wrinkles and tightens pores.”

Lymphatic drainage is particularly important as it helps restore function and balances the body. Dr. Lamee clarifies “the lymphatic system is a network that picks up fluids and waste products from the spaces between cells and then filters and cleans them; it helps rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.”

Just like our bodies, our face can be sluggish in the removal of toxins so massaging the lymphatic system can help move excess water. “In a nutshell, if you want clearer skin, less puffiness and better resistance, give your face a daily lymphatic massage!” Dr. Lamee confirms, adding that aestheticians who have studied how to perform a lymphatic drainage massage will do an excellent job, but the roller is an excellent at-home alternative at a fraction of the cost of a professional treatment.

If this is enough to convince you to get the ball rolling (#sorrynotsorry) with your own massage routine, begin by adding a ten-minute massage on to your morning or evening skincare regime. Dr. Lamees recommends using the jade roller on a clean face after moisturising and starting from the neckline below the clavicle and slowly working in an upwards direction towards the face, using the smaller stone for under the eyes.

Dr. Lamees own Shiffa jade roller is available from her online store due to popular demand. “Ten years ago it was a spa-only product used in all our Shiffa facials and it wasn’t for sale,” she tells us. “A client had a facial and loved the jade roller so I sent her one. She posted it on Snapchat and everyone wanted it!” It seems like ‘everyone’ is on to something. With unprecedented skincare benefits for minimal effort and cost, you’ll see us rolling… into the bathroom at 7am every morning.
