Between Facetune and Instagram’s snatched-to-the-hilt makeup tutorials, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with beauty ideals to the point where your feed becomes less about makeup and more about plastic surgeons.

Well, this Instagram trend is a little different. You won’t find tips for the perfect smokey eye here, or glowy ‘natural’ makeup tutorials. Instead you’ll be treated to a marvellous array of classical art recreated not with paint, but with lipstick, blush and eyeliner. It’s makeup that’s all about art and less about looking ‘pretty’.

As they say, “everything old is new again.” And these Instagram MUAs are creating the most novel makeup trend from centuries-old subject material. The Great Wave Off Kanagawa becomes the perfect eyelid ornamentation. The works of Dalí spark a contrasting gradient lip. So, if you're feeling a little uninspired, we’ve rounded up the museum-worthy masterpieces you need to see.
