But are there any real, scientifically proven health benefits? We did the research, so you don’t have to.
Is Lemon Water Good for Digestion?
Drinking warm water helps relax your stomach muscles, which when combined with the prodigious abilities of lemon, can help immensely with digestion. "The citrus flavonoids in lemon aid the acid in the stomach in breaking down food, which can improve overall digestion,” says Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, author of Belly Fat Diet for Dummies.
Will it give you an energy-boost?
Lemon’s pick-me-up power can be attributed to two vitamins. According to naturopathic physician Laura Neville, N.D., vitamin B plays a large role in assisting the body with releasing energy, and vitamin C increases the absorption of iron which can combat chronic fatigue, helping us wave goodbye to all those lazy Sundays.
What does it mean for your long-term health?
As it turns out, one little lemon wedge packs 6% of your recommended daily value of the strong antioxidant, vitamin C, which has a growing laundry list of benefits; from strengthening your body’s natural defences by boosting your immune system, to helping reduce blood pressure. Not only that, but it can reduce your risk of kidney stones as citrine (a salt in citric acid) binds to calcium, helping block the formation of the dreaded stones. In fact, chronic kidney stones are often treated with potassium citrate, but studies have shown that lemon can do the job just as well. We're sold.
