Is this skincare hack the secret to a radiant complexion?

“Sometimes, when it comes to skincare, too much of a good thing can be more damaging than beneficial,” explains Newby Hands, Global Beauty Director at Net-a-Porter. We’ve all been there – a beauty cabinet brimming with the latest and greatest of launches from our favoured brands, and a rigorous ten-step routine that takes longer than a 60-minute HITT session (both morning and night).

News flash: we may well be wasting our precious time. “Over-applying products that do all the work for us, such as thick moisturisers and oils, can make our skin complacent as, in most cases, the skin is capable of maintaining its own hydration levels,” offers Newby. It’s quite possible that applying product after product can in fact sabotage the skin, especially when combining formulas from different brands and schools of thought.

Instead, a new – and dare we say it, smarter – trend in skincare nods towards a growing minimalist culture and encourages a complete clear out of the beauty bag, leaving room for just a handful of hero products, bursting with multipurpose ingredients. Some are coining it ‘skip-care beauty’ while we’re simply calling it an extra hour in bed.

“Less can mean more when choosing products that have extensive research behind them, and the ingredients included within. I love multi-tasking products that deliver multiple benefits in one application, such as Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Sun Drops – a restorative serum that also creates a powerful sun protection barrier with SPF50 included,” suggests Newby.

The idea is to look towards a smaller selection of products packed with active ingredients, such as vitamin A (or its variant, retinal), vitamin C, and consider serums or moisturisers that can replace other products within a routine.

“Augustinus Bader, U Beauty and Venn are great examples, as they address multiple concerns within one product,” suggests Newby. Team Grazia also loves Dior for its perfectly pared-back products that concentrate on the power ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

A more complicated, multi-step regime can mean more irritation if you’re someone who tends to overload skin with one thick formula after another. Instead, it’s all about carefully selecting products with ingredients that perform multiple tasks in one go.

“It’s the tried and trusted ingredients, rich in antioxidants, as they help protect our skin from free radicals – which can break down cells over time and accelerate the natural ageing process,” states Newby. “A good quality peel and a hydrating hyaluronic acid are a must as a few targeted products often help the skin more than layering up multiple ones.”

So what’s next? Declutter your beauty cabinet and leave room for star products only. “I’ve tried, and continue to try so many different products, but there are some that I keep going back to time after time. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair has been my go-to for years, but I also love the original La Mer moisturiser as it calms, nourishes, soothes and hydrates all in one – it’s not for everyday, but I use it whenever my skin needs something a little extra,” shares Newby.

And when you’ve finished the clean-up, there’s always room to go minimal with your make-up bag too. Try investing in multitasking products, such as BB creams.“I would recommend products that make the skin look healthy and glowing as it’s a great way to look less tired, and to avoid spending too much time concealing unwanted under-eye bags.”

The benefits of introducing a good facial roller into your routine are twofold. Firstly, it encourages a product to penetrate more deeply into the skin layers, amplifying the formula’s effectiveness. Secondly, it can increase lymphatic drainage and improve elasticity, which in turn keeps skin looking and feeling stronger for longer.

Dior Capture Totale High-Performance Gentle Cleanser, Dhs230

Dior’s new Capture Totale launch includes the Super Potent Serum, Correcting Crème, and the High-Performance Gentle Cleanser. Each potion is carefully curated in order to sustain its benefits. Take, for example, Grazia favourite, the cleanser, which allows you to cleanse, eliminating pollutants and make-up build-up deep within the skin’s surface, all while maintaining epidermal hydration. After rinsing, a protective agent remains on the surface, creating an imperceptible veil.
