Is this the future of beauty shopping?

The way we buy beauty has already evolved over the years, but now taking a gamble on shades or emerging from the department store with a smattering of make-up lines, smudges and squiggles on your hand might soon be a thing of the past thanks to L’Oreal’s latest venture into augmented reality.

The company acquired ModiFace augmented reality software back in March this year, and now have announced their plans to launch an AR experience that will allow Instagram and Facebook users to virtually try on products featured in ads. Want to know if that shade of lipstick suits you? No problem, you’ll be able to put it on, smile and pout with a live view from the front camera of your iPhone.

Trying on new products from the comfort of your sofa - or wherever you happen to be - can only ever be helpful, however we suspect coming across this technology in our social feeds and getting a real-time feel of how products look on our complexion will make it more tempting than ever to make new beauty purchases.

NYX, Urban Decay and Yves Saint Laurent will be the first of L’Oreal’s brands to receive the technology – we’ll be staying tuned to our Facebook and Instagram feeds where the augmented reality ads will be appearing soon.
