MAC Global Senior Artist Vimi Joshi on how social media can help you take ownership of your future

Ever wondered what it takes to be a celebrity make-up artist, working backstage at all the major fashion weeks and behind-the-scenes on photoshoots?

Ahead of her Grazia Academy masterclass on 7 March, Global Senior Artist for MAC Cosmetics, Vimi Joshi reveals the secret to building her brand, what true beauty means and why social media is essential for anyone serious about getting ahead.

What does beauty mean to you?

True beauty comes from the inside and it’s definitely in the eye of the beholder. Beauty has its own power and looking and feeling beautiful is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Beauty has captivated people over centuries. Beauty is external and internal for me.

What role does the Middle East play in setting global beauty trends?

Middle Eastern beauty is influencing the world. As the Global Senior Artist for MAC Cosmetics I am being invited all across the world to talk about Middle Eastern Beauty. I am conducting master classes on “How To” create the Middle Eastern look. It’s a proud moment for me as a make-up artist to celebrate this region.

What have been your proudest career moments?

I have been doing fashion weeks internationally for over 18 years and I have had the privilege to work on all the major designer shows from Alexander McQueen to Zac Posen. There are too many to name as I have done shows in New York, London, Milan, Paris, India, Prague, South Africa and Dubai but the proudest moment in my career was definitely doing the TEDx Talk in the UK, talking about my journey and my perspective on beauty.

How has social media changed the make-up artistry profession?

Social media has changed the world and has given beauty a worldwide platform. It has created so much excitement whilst creating a society of inclusion and diversity. Social media has given make-up artists a global voice to tell their beauty story. It’s also given them the opportunity to become beauty influencers and share their personal vision. It also allows make-up artists to teach, educate and inspire the consumer.

What can those signing up for the course expect to learn from your course?

They will learn backstage beauty secrets from fashion shows and celebrity red carpet makeup. They will learn how to create engaging content and build their own beauty brand.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Teaching and educating the artists and consumers on makeup techniques and empowering them. Sharing my knowledge and giving back to others. Working with designers to create makeup looks to bring their collection to life is also very rewarding for me too.
