If you attended this year’s Sole DXB you might have come across streetwear label Occhino SPORT. The brainchild of New York-based designer Vianna Occhino, her designs use premium fabric technology to combine comfort with eco-conscious credentials, but it’s the thought process behind the brand’s aesthetic that really sets it apart.
“At its core, Occhino SPORT is a luxury streetwear collection born through my personal journey with mental health," Vianna explains. "As I found my way back into the world of fashion after battling depression, I wanted to create a capsule that supports and promotes mental health and wellness through fitness. We drive innovation through prioritizing humanity at the heart of our production process. In terms of design, we wanted to create something that would help cater to a large demographic of women who lead a sporty lifestyle and want to dress in a way that frees them to transition between everyday life and performance seamlessly."
The collection which features abstract linear patterns is inspired by Vianna’s personal EEG scans, taken during her battle with anxiety and depression.
“Although they don’t replicate traditional wave patterns, they represent how warped perspective can become while suffering mental illness. The waves in our luxe knitwear pieces are placed in ways that outline woman’s curves and flatters the body. You can also find our creative take on neurotransmitters throughout some prints in the collection,” she adds.
And improving mental health through physical health and wellbeing is also a fundamental element.
"Although the collection is comfortable, the concept of Occhino SPORT in terms of brain function is more about supporting fitness for mental health,” Vianna says. “In some cases, people with higher stress/anxiety levels have more overactive brainwaves.”
And she now sees it as her duty to educate others as she redefines people’s approach to wellbeing. “Those with highly stimulated brains would tremendously benefit from a proper fitness routine, because they need to release overproduced energy. Fitness, as well as the right diet, has been scientifically proven to help maintain a healthy mind-set because our body and minds are so closely linked. Certain foods can actually boost our mood, provide more of the right energy, and aid in sleep. For me, the ultimate goal is to be a mediator between the world of fashion and healthcare education."
