When Maria Grazia Chiuri declared, “We should all be feminists,” in her inaugural collection as the first female Artistic Director of Dior in 2017, happily, it wasn’t just a slogan T-shirt du jour or a fleeting Instagram fashion moment. It signalled a commitment to sisterhood, solidarity and female empowerment that culminated in the launch of the Women@Dior mentorship programme on 8 March – International Women’s Day – the same year.
Today, 400 female students from participating fashion, business and engineering colleges in 11 cities worldwide (including New York, Dubai, Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris), have been paired with mentors from the house of Dior in order to develop their professional network and “own their destiny.”
Women@Dior mentees are selected for their talent, ambition and generosity, and are “all united in the notion that their professional success is related to the sorority.” One standout student chosen by Dior is Zinah Issa from Dubai’s very own College of Fashion Design in Business Bay, and the initiative has already taught her the importance of “representing our true selves and opinions, no matter the circumstances.”
The college’s dean, Haifa Al Anjari, tells Grazia, “I’m very happy that one of our talented students has been selected for this valuable opportunity. We at CFD encourage students to participate in mentorship programmes that are meaningful and significant to fashion design or fashion business management to not only improve students’ academic performance but also equip them with the skills to thrive in a professional environment.” Zinah adds, “I cannot wait to see where this journey will take me.” Keen to get your fashion foot in the Dior? Applications for the next Women@Dior intake open in January 2020. Good luck!
