Kat Von D is now making sustainable shoes out of mushrooms

If you’re a make-up lover, chances are the name Kat Von D rings a bell. Known for the original liquid lipsticks and the cult-favourite liquid eyeliner, soon you’ll be associating her name with fashion – or, more specifically, shoes. The gothic queen has been a vegan since 2013 but recently realised she wasn’t living a full vegan lifestyle when she noticed her shoe collection contained pieces created with leather or snakeskin.

It was the struggle to find cruelty-free footwear that drove her to create Von D shoes – a line of cruelty-free, high-quality shoes that are what your inner rock chick has always wanted. If only we had these when we were fourteen and going through our phase. Don’t worry if you’re not into super-high heels and blacker-than-black boots because Kat has created shoes to suit every style - in the same factories as Chanel and Gucci, no less.

Not only are Von D Shoes vegan, but some of the collection is sustainable and uses leather-like materials to mimic the non-vegan fabric. And Kat is getting really creative with her materials, using apples, pineapples and even mushrooms to make sure her creations are cruelty-free. If you’re going to go sustainable, you may as well go big or go home, right? Kat’s thoughts exactly. That’s why her shoes will be limited, so not to promote fast fashion and damage the environment, and will also donate 100 per cent of proceeds from certain styles to animal shelters.

And, because it’s Kat Von D, her shoes will go on sale here on World Vegan Day. That’s November 1 to you and me.
