With celebrity clients that include Beyoncé and J-Lo, it’s safe to say that Syrian couturier Rami Al Ali knows how to dress divas. But might he have met his match when it came to Egyptian YouTube sensation-turned-talk show host Abla Fahita? “I’ve seen her show several times, Rami tells Grazia. “She’s funny, witty, smart, and isn’t scared to tackle social issues head.”
Yet it wasn’t until Abla’s red carpet reporter role Dubai Film Festival that he found himself dressing her. “Think of her as Joan Rivers from Fashion Police with a sharper tongue, I would say,” Rami points out. Is this the first time he’s dressed a puppet, Grazia wonders? “It’s the first time I’ve done it professionally,” he quips.
Known for his simple yet sophisticated style signature that references the Golden Age of Hollywood with a modern twist, it’s no surprise Abla has Rami on speed dial. It took his atelier a week to conjure up this old-Hollywood couture gown for Abla – a modified version of a style from his previous collections in fully sequinned gold adorned with approximately 400 Swarovski crystals - one of three dresses created for her. “She has a lot in common with the Rami Al Ali woman,” the couturier observes. “She’s independent, she has a strong character, she knows what she wants, she has a unique style and she likes to stand out.”
But what Grazia really wants to know is was she a diva? Leaning closer, Rami whispers, “A big diva! It’s just, ‘Me, me, me!’”
