If you feel like binge-watching your favourite shows is getting in the way of your creativity, and preventing you from doing great things, don’t despair because one of fashion’s most celebrated geniuses is doing the exact same thing.
Speaking at the Fashion Talks event in his hometown of Antwerp, Belgium, former Calvin Klein Chief Creative Officer, Raf Simons, revealed that these days he’s now more inspired by what he’s watching on TV than the runways every season.
“Today, I find fewer things new,” he said. “At the end of the ‘80s, when I started looking, and then during your studies, and then when I started going into it, I thought everything was new. It’s all so avant-garde, so extreme, and that I miss a lot.”
“You can ask my team. Every day I talk about television series. I think there are so many people bringing daring TV shows, controversial topics, incredible new ways of making and building scenarios,” he added.
The Belgian designer who previously worked at Jil Sander and Christian Dior, also spoke about his decision to take a step back from the fashion industry - he is yet to take up another high profile position following his department from Calvin Klein last year.
“When I was at Dior, I felt there was an incredible pressure from the outside on me to be with me while I was designing, while I was in the studio,” he continued.
“It was mainly because one designer was very much at ease with it. I don’t criticize people from doing it, but because other people do something, it should not be a system for everybody.”
