Don’t you dare call them trashy

Say what?! Why hoop earrings are more flattering than make-up

Poor hoop earrings. How would you like to be labelled trashy, unsubtle and un-ladylike? Yeah, we didn’t think so. In reality, the simple hoop is a classic accessory that has never gone out of style, and is just as relevant today as it was in the disco era of the '60s and '70s.

Going back even further, the gold hoop earring has been a powerful symbol in numerous cultures throughout history. It can actually be traced back to Ancient Egyptian times, where it was adorned on the most royal of people. Even cats - that most sacred animal - were decorated with gold hoop earrings.

Since then our beloved hoop has suffered a bit of a backlash, despite it actually helping our faces have extra definition. Like any statement earring, hoops have an ability to draw the eye towards your face, but by being circular in shape they frame your face quickly and easily and are extra complementary to your jaw and cheekbones, defining your features with both the shape and shade they create. See ya, contouring!

In a further effort to diminish their negative reputation today - and proving our point entirely - is model-of-the-moment Emily Ratajkowski, who stars in Alison Lou’s new hoop-earring campaign.

Loucite by Alison Lou features a 12-piece collection comprised of colourful Lucite and enamel hoops, in three sizes (small, medium, large). And, put simply, we want it all. Creative Director and Designer, Alison Chemla tells Grazia, “We wanted to create an affordable, accessible collection, using unique materials and were very thoughtful when it came to the colours and sizing of our loucite jelly hoops.”

Hoop earrings are classic. Simples. Here are Grazia’s top five favourites:
