With Kate Moss as their unofficial brand ambassador, it's no wonder that the Ibizan-born label took off. With a firm celebrity and fashion editor following, the Balearic brand pays homage to the island’s hedonistic and bohemian history with their swishy dresses and metallic minis
Describe the fashion scene in Ibiza.
The Ibizan fashion scene is rich in heritage and has been since the 1970s. A time when people enjoyed the liberation of expression in a place where they could feel free and comfortable in whatever they wore. It didn’t matter how colourful or sheer their clothes were, which is so inspiring. This eccentric essence is still present in the way people dress today and is echoed through many of our Vali pieces.
What do you think is the style of the Ibiza girl?
She’s free-spirited, bold and sensual. She’s adventurous and enjoys the novelty of never knowing where each day will take her. When she shops she’s looking for something versatile, something that she can wear straight from beach to bar, like one of our hero pieces, Joelene, a style we re-introduce each season. It’s soft, sheer and has a cascading dipped maxi dress that fastens up the front and can be worn a variety of ways. This was one of our original Vali designs that we created when we were still living in Ibiza. We noticed a gap in the market for luxe, show-stopping dresses that were good enough to wear over a bikini during the day and throughout the evening for dinner or dancing.
Do you think your clothes are emblematic of Spanish design?
Not every item directly epitomises Spanish design, however we are constantly enamoured and inspired by our Spanish heritage. Each collection generally features a few items that are directly influenced by this; there also tends to be a recurring Mediterranean elegance throughout our aesthetic.
Who do you design for?
Season upon season we have become more and more in tune with our customer. We have some very loyal fans, which is amazing, and we design each item with her in mind. She’s a vivacious, adventurous and outgoing girl who loves to look and feel good. She’s not defined by age – often mothers and daughters shop our collection simultaneously and share snaps of themselves both wearing Vali at a wedding or event.
What are the key components of your design ethos?
Our collections are diverse and each piece has its own story. We design each item to stand out and ooze individuality. We clash colours, prints and quirky details together so each piece appears unpredictable. Although we focus on the fun element of ‘dressing up,’ wearability is super key with every garment we introduce. Every silhouette is sexy and every fabric is luxurious and sensual. We want our lady to feel every inch as beautiful and powerful as she is.
Where is the De La Vali girl going on holiday?
A dream trip for a De La Vali girl would be a girls' trip to Colombia where she can experience a different culture, enjoy elegant dinners and dance the night away to salsa under the stars.
Where will you be spending your summer this year?
Obviously, we will definitely spend quite a lot of time in Ibiza. We are also planning a little getaway to Positano and Sicily in Italy.
What are your jet-set traveller wardrobe staples?
All of our dreamy long floaty pieces like Almentra and Jolene, and a few cute little short numbers like Koko, Guadalupe and Suki. So we are ready for all occasions. We would team these looks with cowboy boots, espadrilles and a cropped leather jacket over our shoulders.
