THE EDITOR-APPROVED BAGS OF AW19

“You must have loads of designer bags, right?” asks my friend, who’s just invested her savings in a black Gucci Marmont. This is what I like to call the husband of bags – the bag that’s going to be there day in and day out, regardless of your mood. It’s robust, cool, classic and collectible, and it will happily come to that dinner party with you, even if it’s not feeling it. I have my husband bag already – seven years and going strong with the Mulberry Lily in black and gold. I’m committed to it and I’ll never sell it, but when shopping for a bag now I’m looking for something extra special that it can’t offer. A bit like that fun friend who you only see once in a while but will party all night long with you.

If I’m going to separate with a substantial amount of dirhams I don’t want a bag that the world has already seen; I want one that will stand out but isn’t brash, and if the brand isn’t on show, I’ll love it even more. The new Bottega Veneta pouch is that bag. Firstly, it’s a multitasker; secondly, the gold shine makes it zany enough to not fade into the background, but is subtle enough to work with most colours and clothes; thirdly, it gives my look an extra boost and makes my heart beat a little faster when I hold it. Finally, it holds everything but the kitchen sink. Put simply: it excites me. My friend is right, I do have a fair few bags, but not all of them make me feel like the Bottega Pouch does.
