WAG, popstar, Spice Girl... Victoria Beckham has been called many things over the years but since she defied her critics and successfully launched her eponymous label in 2009, she's undoubtedly secured the title of bona fide fashion icon to boot.
In Dubai's Mall of the Emirates as part of its five-day World Of Fashion event recently, Victoria sat down at the shopping destination's Central Galleria Bazaar Capsule activation stage to reveal details about her upcoming endeavours and past obstacles.
"Breaking into the fashion industry, I was pretty aware of peoples pre-conception and you know that was going to happen, I was a popstar married to a footballer and I was going into a very different industry," she shared. "But for me it was never about proving anything to anybody other than myself and really keeping my head down and focusing on the product and letting the product really speak for itself really."
And despite hitting the headlines thanks to a series of fashion faux pas back in the '90s and Noughties, Victoria has no regrets.
"I’ve worn some PVC and I’m not afraid to say it, worn some spicy outfits, very spicy. But I look back at those pictures and I see a smile. It’s been a journey, it’s made me who I am and I look back at those pictures and definitely smile," Victoria revealed before poking fun at some of husband David's historic looks.
"I mean David’s worn some outfits hasn’t he, let’s not forget that full-on leather look, it’s iconic! Full Gucci leather look at a Versace party, which was such a crazy thing to do."
While she used to favour black, the London-based designer now likes to infuse her wardrobe with bright pops of colour, something that has also informed the past couple of seasons at her label. "I did use to wear a lot of black but I have started to wear a lot of colour and honestly I think it’s so flattering and I love how it makes me feel happy and I also like that it feels so modern and cool as well. So it’s the clashing of the colours that have become quite the key. It’s happy and I think we all need to be happy and enjoy."
However, when it comes to her beauty past, there are some looks the mother-of-four wishes she could retract from memory. "I cringe more at make-up looks, we’ve done skinny eyebrows, thick eyebrows, way too much lip liner and blush," Victoria admitted.
But ever the optimist, VB has used these past regrets to objectively examine what doesn't (and does) work when it comes to beauty, and she's been able to take the lessons she's learnt into the lab to assist in the creation of her new beauty line.
"I’ve learnt so much through seeing pictures of myself that I can use to recreate collections and beauty looks," she explained.
And it's possibly this kind of unhindered self-reflection that has helped her cultivate the global empire she's famous for today.
Her plans for the future? "Just working hard and focus and having a strong point of view and always bettering myself, I’m very ambitious and there’s so much I want to do."
