The throwback Instagram dedicated to wonderfully extra ’80s interiors

Some would say the ‘80s were the physical embodiment of the words faux pas. Case in point: the notoriously large hair, and brightly coloured spandex to match. Meanwhile, others would say the era was a prodigal time for, well, everything. Case in point: see above.

Maintaining the supremacy of everything ‘80s is London-based retail manager, Simon Knight, with his offerings of delightfully garish ‘80s interiors on his Instagram account, @the_80s_interior. Existing as the antithesis to the modern-day fixation on clean marble-accented minimalism, his Instagram favours the design maximalism the era was distinguished by- think chunky TV sets, stocky bathtubs, and the vibrant juxtaposition of kitschy neons against nauseating pastels.

With an impressive 144k followers racked up, it’s difficult to tell the account came from humble origins. Created initially to source photos of an old shopping mall he used to visit; Knight posted prompting photos which garnered an overwhelmingly positive response, revealing a gap in the Instagram interiors market. Through extensive Ebay and thrift store trawling, Knight salvaged vintage interiors magazines to harvest the kitschy images @the_80s_interior has become known for, with one unifying theme – the sense of nostalgia.

Hoping for the account to exist as a fantastical destination for his followers, Knight explains, “On my feed I like the interiors to be void of people as I like my followers to imagine themselves in the rooms and make it their own.”
